Autumn Garden
Fri, 24 Apr 2009Autumn is a great time to get out in the garden. The heat of the summer has passed and the soil is still warm enough to allow new planting to establish good root development before the winter sets in. It is almost your last opportunity to plant spring flowering bulbs. Annual flowers that can be planted now include Alyssum, Cineraria, Nemesia, Pansy, Sweet Pea, Carnation, Lobelia and Dianthus.
I always find that rejuvenating my pots at this time of the year really helps them through the winter and gives them excellent spring growth. I remove the top third of the existing soil/potting media and mix it in with a premium potting mix, a little bit of compost and some blood and bone. Mulch well ensuring to keep well away from the trunk of the plant.
